Warning Against Judging Others and Against Boasting (James 4:11-17) New Living and Good News Translations

NEW LIVING TRANSLATION
11  Don’t speak evil against each other, dear brothers and sisters.  If you criticize and judge each other, then you are criticizing and judging God’s law. But your job is to obey the law, not to judge whether it applies to you.
12  God alone, who gave the law, is the Judge. He alone has the power to save or to destroy. So what right do you have to judge your neighbor?
13  Look here, you who say, “Today or tomorrow we are going to a certain town and will stay there a year. We will do business there and make a profit.”
14  How do you know what your life will be like tomorrow? Your life is like the morning fog—it’s here a little while, then it’s gone.
15  What you ought to say is, “If the Lord wants us to, we will live and do this or that.”
16  Otherwise you are boasting about your own plans, and all such boasting is evil.
17  Remember, it is sin to know what you ought to do and then not do it.

GOOD NEWS TRANSLATION
11  Do not criticize one another, my friends. If you criticize or judge another Christian, you criticize and judge the Law. If you judge the Law, then you are no longer one who obeys the Law, but one who judges it.
12  God is the only lawgiver and judge. He alone can save and destroy. Who do you think you are, to judge someone else?
13  Now listen to me, you that say, “Today or tomorrow we will travel to a certain city, where we will stay a year and go into business and make a lot of money.”
14  You don't even know what your life tomorrow will be! You are like a puff of smoke, which appears for a moment and then disappears.
15  What you should say is this: “If the Lord is willing, we will live and do this or that.”
16  But now you are proud, and you boast; all such boasting is wrong.
17  So then, if we do not do the good we know we should do, we are guilty of sin.
